HBO Home Entertainment is pleased to announce that their $200m award-winning miniseries event The Pacific has become the fastest selling television series box set of 2010 with UK and Ireland cumulative DVD and Blu-ray sales in excess of 130,000 units in its first week.
Released on Monday 1 November in a beautifully packaged six disc presentation tin, the highly acclaimed miniseries has set the Christmas gifting retail market alight, capturing the sales crown from The Inbetweeners and cementing its status as one of the most anticipated releases of the year since its broadcast on Sky Movies.
Of the successful launch Ian Fullerton, Marketing Director of HBO Home Entertainment, said: “We’re delighted with the result at HBO. We always knew this would be a big release and it’s great to see it doing so well across every sector of the market. The gifting potential on The Pacific is huge (its companion piece Band of Brothers is a continual top seller every Christmas) so we can’t wait to see where we’ll end up at the end of the year. At its current rate, The Pacific has the potential to be one of the biggest new release TV DVD titles ever.” He continued: “Looking back over the year, we’ve seen some great results in the TV sector. Our own True Blood as well as The Vampire Diaries, Glee, The Inbetweeners and last week’s Family Guy release are just a few of the TV shows that have really delivered over the past eleven months. The market conditions are tough but it’s very heartening to see a vibrant & healthy TV market.”
Executively produced by Tom Hanks, Steven Spielberg and Gary Goetzman and winner of 8 Primetime Emmy® awards including Outstanding Miniseries, The Pacific sees Hollywood’s most-respected names reunite to uncover the true stories behind one of history’s epic conflicts and create the ideal companion to their phenomenally successful Band of Brothers. That Emmy® and Golden Globe® winning HBO miniseries is currently the biggest selling single series TV DVD box set of all time – on target to achieve 2 million UK sales before Christmas having solidly sold in excess of 100,000 units each year since its release in 2002 and now owned by 1 in 12 UK households.
Like its predecessor, The Pacific is a cinematic blockbuster for the small screen, representing a revolution in television and further cements HBO’s position as a pioneer of innovative and challenging programming. The heroic ten-part adventure tracks the intertwined real-life journeys of three U.S Marines across the vast canvas of the Pacific Theatre during World War II. From the very first scene witness the reality of war with disorientating and historical accuracy, set against a breath-taking and often harrowing backdrop.
Described as ‘Epic, explosive and extremely exciting’ by ShortList, ‘It’s not just telly, it’s an event’ by The Sunday Times Culture and The Independent said ‘Prepare to be impressed by its spectacle and its painstaking authenticity’.
